Falken Tyres History

Falken Tire is a brand of passenger car, light truck, and medium truck tires owned by the Japanese company Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI). It was launched in its native country of Japan in 1983, and was introduced to the North American market two years later and in Europe in 1988.

Sumitomo is a rubber industry manufacturing company that is based out Japan and is probably one of the largest rubber manufacturer industries in the world. Sumitomo has just been at the forefront of everything and anything rubber related. And when they decided to start getting into more heavily they partnered with any company that they could.

Sumitomo originally got involved with Dunlop tire manufacturing in 1909, they just decided to create a partnership and it worked very well for them for a very long time. As the years progress, the two companies essentially became friends with benefits, they just continued to grow and intermingle either in Japan or just throughout the world.

Dunlop and Sumitomo essentially reconfigured and split partnership ways and Sumitomo turned into SRI. Which is Sumitomo Rubber Industries and Dunlop still considered to be a brand that they use and develop and produce. Today Dunlop belong 75% to Goodyear and 25% to Sumitomo.

Sumitomo and Goodyear had a pretty long lasting relationship, it lasted about 18 years. In June 2015, Sumitomo and Goodyear announced that they would dissolve their worldwide partnership. As part of the deal, Sumitomo bought Goodyear Dunlop Tires North America, and began produce Falken Tire-branded tires in January 2016.

Falken really didn’t enter the market like a lot of other companies usually do. You see when a tire manufacturer company comes into a market; they usually come out with like a bunch of marketing money, a bunch of plans to integrate into the consumer world. Falken didn´t do that, they only just jump to the motor sport world.

Falken started made tires only for race car drivers and then start made tires for consumers. That´s why Falken is just known as an ultra-high performance tire that specializes in racing.
