Otago, situated in the south-eastern part of the South Island has an area of about 32,000 km², and its main town is in Dunedin (the second largest city in the South Island). It is followed by the regions of Oamaru, Balclutha, Alexandra and the tourist centres of Queenstown and Wanaka. In the south of the Otago peninsula, Wanaka, there is an important coal mine and also rivers such as Waitaki and Clutha flow which generate electricity to the whole region.
